He began skating in 1988 and turned professional in 1996 after winning an amateur contest at the Vans Warped Tour. He has won 21 X Games medals including nine golds across vert, vert best trick, and big air disciplines. From 2008 to 2010 he won three consecutive X Games Skateboard Vert golds, the first vert three-peat in X Games history. Known for integrating street-influenced flip tricks like nollie heelflip indy 540s into vert competition, he significantly evolved what was technically expected on the ramp.
