Tony Hawk Setup FAQ

What deck does Tony Hawk ride?

Tony Hawk rides a Birdhouse Skateboards Tony Hawk Pro Model (8.5") deck in a 8.5" width as of 2026. Deck choice is the single biggest factor in a pro's setup — width affects stance and stability, while concave and construction drive pop and flick. You can shop the same Birdhouse Skateboards Tony Hawk Pro Model (8.5") deck through the buy links in the setup above.

What trucks does Tony Hawk use?

Tony Hawk uses Independent Trucks trucks. Trucks determine how a skateboard turns and how it lands grinds, and pros typically match hanger width to deck width for proper alignment. Most pro skaters stick with one truck brand for years once they have the feel dialed in.

What shoes does Tony Hawk skate in?

Tony Hawk skates in Hawk Skate Shoes. Skate shoes are built with reinforced toe caps, vulcanized or cupsole construction, and grippy gum rubber outsoles for board feel and durability. Pros often go through several pairs a month from heavy daily skating.

What bearings does Tony Hawk use?

Tony Hawk uses Bones Ceramics bearings. Bearings determine roll speed and how long your wheels keep spinning, and a properly maintained set should last as long as your wheels with regular cleaning. Pros usually upgrade bearings before swapping wheels.

About Tony Hawk

Tony Hawk is an American professional skateboarder, entrepreneur, and filmmaker from San Diego, California, born May 12, 1968. He received a skateboard from his older brother at 9, began winning amateur contests throughout California by 12, and turned professional at 14 when he joined the Powell Peralta Bones Brigade. By 16 he was widely regarded as the best competitive skateboarder in the world. Over a 17-year professional career he competed in 103 contests, winning 73 and placing second in 19, and was named the top vert skater in the world every year from 1984 to 1996. He invented dozens of tricks including the ollie-to-Indy, the gymnast plant, and the frontside 540-rodeo flip. On June 27, 1999, at the X Games in San Francisco, he became the first skateboarder in history to land a 900 on his twelfth attempt. He co-founded Birdhouse Skateboards in 1992 during skateboarding's commercial low point, refinancing his house to keep the company alive. That same year the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater video game series launched, eventually surpassing $1.4 billion in total sales and introducing skateboarding to a mainstream global audience. He retired from competitive skating in 2003 after winning his 10th X Games gold medal. He founded the Tony Hawk Foundation, now the Skatepark Project, which has funded public skateparks in low-income communities across all 50 states.
